WNY Local Partners with Community Programs

Local 276, located in Western NY, is collaborating with community-based organizations to provide career opportunities to those enrolled in workforce programs. Through these efforts, the Carpenters union has trained and welcomed several new members into the local, who are working on projects throughout the region.

Walter Ball participated in the Square One re-entry program through Workforce Buffalo. He says, “They provided me with a life-changing opportunity and connected me with Local 276 Carpenters union. The opportunity afforded to me has allowed me to provide for myself and family while giving me the benefits and security needed to live a healthy life. Thank you to Workforce Buffalo and my Local 276 family!”

In addition to Workforce Buffalo, Local 276 has been working with community programs through the Buffalo Urban League, University at Buffalo EOC, Job Corps, Rochester Careers in Construction TRACS, Community Resources for Justice—The Lighthouse and the Buffalo Center for Employment Opportunities (CEO).

Local 276 Council Representative Jomo Akono acknowledges the importance of working with community partners in recruitment efforts. “The community organizations in WNY are preparing potential candidates for apprentice training and work entry. It has been my pleasure to provide carpentry instruction and career information to the program participants. Our community partners have been doing a tremendous job referring candidates who choose to take advantage of these opportunities presented to them,” Akono says.

Many of the Local 276 members who participated in these programs are now able to receive sustainable wages and benefits provided by the Carpenters union, such as healthcare and a pension. They can support themselves and their families, secure vehicles and work toward goals such as owning a home.

“The Buffalo Urban League is proud to highlight a successful community partnership with the North Atlantic States Carpenters Union Local 276 that has led to meaningful employment outcomes for local residents. Through coordinated outreach, hands-on training, and direct union engagement, program participants were prepared for careers in the skilled trades and successfully placed into employment with union contractors.
