Local Carpenters and Construction Workers Hold Rally Against Tax Fraud

Monday, April 15th, 2024 | Fox 40 coverage.

On Hawley Street, local members of the North Atlantic State Regional Council of Carpenters (NASRCC) held an event to inform the public about the prominence of tax fraud within the construction business.

The tax fraud issues include forms of wage theft, employers cheating workers out of benefits and proper wages, and unchecked bookkeeping in the industry.

The Century Foundation estimates up to 120,000 workers are affected in New York state and it costs taxpayers nearly $603 million.

“It’s a lot of information to absorb and really try and understand if you don’t work in construction and you’re not a part of that industry and to really understand how many layers there are to what’s going on. I would just ask to educate yourself, pay attention, and elect officials that are actually going to take care of you and protect your tax dollars,” said Ian Williams, Council Representative with NASRCC.
