Union Carpenters to Hold Rally Against Tax Fraud on Tax Day

Hartford, NY – Members of the North Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters (NASRCC) will rally this Monday, April 15 against tax fraud in the construction industry at a location that was recently issued a work stoppage due to three of the site’s contractors failing to provide workers compensation insurance for their workers. One of the contractors was also found to have misrepresented workers as independent subcontractors.

A new, first-of-its-kind report from The Century Foundation (TCF) estimates that up to over 30,000 construction workers throughout the state are being taken advantage of by their employers, representing 21 percent of the construction workforce. The prevalence of contractors cheating workers and Connecticut economy comes at a $146 million cost to taxpayers, the report found. TCF researchers emphasize that their estimates “possibly—if not likely—undercount the extent of worker misclassification in the construction industry.”

Similar events will be held throughout our seven-state region, and other regional councils of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America across the country. Together these groups will work to elevate the conversation around construction industry tax fraud and the associated costs to American taxpayers and their communities.
