Contractors

Partners in our industry's most important joint venture.

The North Atlantic States Carpenters Training Fund (NASCTF) is a training program jointly sponsored by the North Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters and our signatory building contractors. Through its programs, the NASCTF offers training in residential and commercial carpentry, floorcovering and pile driving for both apprentices and journeymen.

The North Atlantic States Carpenters Union offers an apprenticeship program created to thoroughly develop the talents and skills of carpenters. This type of structured training is required to make sure carpenters are fully qualified, well-rounded and productive. It includes classroom and workshop training in addition to employment with the most experienced professionals in the industry.

Apprentices earn wages and benefits that enable them to provide for themselves and their families. Typically, apprentices start around 50% or higher of the journey worker pay scale. As their training progresses, apprentices earn more until they become full carpenters, called “journeymen,” and are then paid at the journeymen rate.

The apprenticeship program is a competency-based training program that includes both classroom training and on the job training. The training consists of 160+ hours a year of classroom and shop training as well as 4000-8000 hours of on-the-job training over a four to five-year period. All apprentices are trained with the most current curriculum of safety and building technology.

Create Your Future

The Apprenticeship Program provides apprentices tuition-free education. The program offers more than 150 different courses covering all aspects of the carpentry trade, specialty crafts and safety training, 90% of training is hands-on.

Training for Diverse Learners

The Carpenters Union is committed to training all workers equally, including diverse learners. Hear from NASCTF’s Ziven Drake and instructor Jarlath Waters as they discuss the UBC’s dedication to supporting neurodivergent apprentices—including young adults with autism. By recognizing individual needs and providing tailored learning packages, we’re proud to be making the skilled trades more accessible for everyone.

Not sure if a career in carpentry is right for you?

A pre-apprenticeship program is a great way to explore the trade before making a long-term commitment. Pre-apprenticeship programs give individuals the opportunity to experience the carpentry trade firsthand and determine whether it fits their career goals. Think of it as a trial period—a chance to learn the basics, gain confidence, and see what working in the field is really like.

Participants are introduced to the fundamental principles of carpentry, developing the technical knowledge and practical, hands-on skills needed to succeed in the trade. For some, completing a pre-apprenticeship becomes the first step toward joining the Carpenters Union, where apprentices can earn while they learn—gaining valuable on-the-job training while receiving pay and benefits.

If you’re curious about carpentry but want to build skills and experience first, check out some of our pre-apprenticeship partners:
