Vineyard Wind gets long-awaited approval

The first utility-scale, offshore wind farm in the United States was given final approval for construction and operation by the Biden administration this week. The 84 wind turbines of Cape Wind will generate 800 megawatts, powering more than 400,000 homes and businesses.

The project has been supported by the union since it’s conception more than 20 years ago. It will generate thousands of union jobs at its location 12 nautical miles south of Martha’s Vineyard and in on-shore manufacturing and staging areas.

Dave Woodman and Dan Kuhs, retired representatives from Pile Drivers Local 56, took an early lead on supporting the project. Current Rep Dave Borrus has also played a key role in developing offshore safety training for the project and coordinating members to speak at public hearings and attend rallies.
