Cindy Mohanlall

Cindy Mohanlall is a mother of three, a 4th year apprentice in Local 291 and a council delegate.

Cindy, who had steady but unsatisfying career in the medical field decided to explore the Carpenters apprenticeship program in her 30s.

“I willing to start all over again and start something new. I had zero experience – I didn’t even know how to read a tape measure. But the adjustment was quick. If you’re willing to work hard, have a positive attitude, a good work ethic and above all be proud of what you produce, it’s a great trade.”

Having earned a college degree, Cindy says the carpentry apprenticeship program is something everyone should know about.

“I can tell you this is an awesome work/study program. Being paid to learn, getting medical/retirement benefits, on-the-job training, the list goes on. But you also get to be proud of what you produce at the end of the day – and most importantly – you get to have fun!”

“I’ve gone through college where you’re paying for everything – tuition, books, everything – and at the end of it, you’re lucky to get a job in your field of study. As an apprentice, I work and learn every day while earning a paycheck and getting great retirement and health benefits that cover my entire family.” An added bonus? She has gained a brotherhood and a sisterhood.

“Being in the Carpenters union is like being part of a unique family. The help we give each other and the training I’ve had is very rewarding. I’m excited to be able build new infrastructure and I love supporting the community by volunteering with other union members. It’s always exciting, and putting on my tool belt every day, I feel like a superhero! I got my tools, and I’m out there building America!”
